Something about seeing a fun base on the mini makes the finish line feel closer and makes it easier to power through. Speaking of bases, I had fun with these. I’ve been making subtle tweaks to my process, trying to get it exactly right. But having the general plan established is giving me the freedom to experiment on new things. I decided I wanted some still-burning coals on this one (below) and updated the charcoal process with a white underpaint and then some fire colors down into the recesses. It’s odd- it looks fantastic for a day or two and then it kind of gets dull and I have to put paint down again to get the saturation up. I wonder if maybe the charcoal is soaking up paint? Might have to try sealing it next time before painting. Regardless I think it’s fun and I’ll definitely sprinkle that in here and there on future minis.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO0pfHTeBwvxLXY3hYEUPadBKzCOtoe9fsj46aOBNk-gPE55zrpEfNPgm5zsDb72h9S7UcDqdjFhN6_zByCN0WC_3zaGk4YMy-b-mu_omNb6ArTnmB77TLOUdbncrwvWA-PlXewzRH7Kc-wSThrRTubezosLKKpK187g5-E-GnHPPptlPR_IwlUXXP/s2054/LRM_20230308_112156.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2054" data-original-width="2053" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO0pfHTeBwvxLXY3hYEUPadBKzCOtoe9fsj46aOBNk-gPE55zrpEfNPgm5zsDb72h9S7UcDqdjFhN6_zByCN0WC_3zaGk4YMy-b-mu_omNb6ArTnmB77TLOUdbncrwvWA-PlXewzRH7Kc-wSThrRTubezosLKKpK187g5-E-GnHPPptlPR_IwlUXXP/s320/LRM_20230308_112156.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p>So thats my third finished squad, plus a Company Ancient. 12 minis in 2.5 months. I've handled a few details but have a few more to go before I throw on the decals and call em done. I tried Trip's suggestion of using Reikland Fleshshade instead of the sepia wash over the gold. I like it better, but still feel like the GW inks kind of cloud up the Vallejo alcohol metallics. Step in the right direction though. Might have to try an oil or enamel wash on the next one. Any excuse to go to the hobby store.<br /><br />I tried something different for the muzzle burn on this squad and I don't like it as much as on my Tac squad. These guys were 100% Tamiya Weathering Master. I only got 2 colors instead of the 3 from doing washes with Tamiya over them. Might have to go back to the old method. It's not gonna be gracing the pages of White Dwarf any time soon, but it looks good enough to an opponent from across the table. There's elements that came out pretty well. Certainly the first time on this particular machine. I've got access to a printer that can do decals. It could also probably print directly on the part, but that's a test for another day. The decal stock on it is pretty thick so it didn't lay down as nicely as I would've liked, and probably because of the thickness it also didn't respond to decal softener all that well. Probably 8-9 coats and I just gave up on trying to get it to fall in the wrinkles right up at the top. I might try for a bit darker on the next one.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">When I did the edge highlighting I hadn't gotten my brush control back yet. That's already much better on newer models I'm working on. I'm still struggling with my metallics. The gold in particular. It's Vallejo Old Gold alcohol metallic, and I love the stuff. Goes on looking great. Nice and opaque. But I haven't found the right tool for giving it depth. My old pot of GW Seraphim wash probably needs replacing, but I feel like most of their washes go over metallics looking a little cloudy and it just dulls the nice sheen of the metallic paint- at least they do on these Vallejo metallics. I tried some brown mixed with contrast medium and that's got some promise, but I haven't found the right brown yet. Will keep at it. </div><br /><div>My Aggressor squad is nearing completion. Check out the step-by-step on how I did these bases.</span></div><p></p><span><a name='more'></a></span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I was really excited to get to basing these minis- it really is one of my favorite parts of the hobby. You get to be sloppy and creative and it's just kind of a low-pressure zen exercise. I wanted my Salamanders to look like they'd been burning the place to shit, turning everything into a dusty burned out wasteland. Here's how I went about it.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">First (and I missed this step on my first squad like a moron) paint the bases a dark brown. I used Rhinox hide. It's not too important what color it is, just that it's a natural tone and it's darker than the surface you eventually want. Once that's dry, slather it all with PVA glue. This serves two functions- 1. holding down your first cork pieces (can also use some super glue if you prefer and then do the PVA everywhere else), and 2. it helps the paint crack when we get to that step.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKPTceAXJ_wANsHeoorpfZEotkmBNoLjOeVezB-ZQsFJxQwJ8F8vkg352XHi2Sm9bJF4giKHcybBfpm2SGjoGzIGtkmRB2OJBV7lRQFPowBXTmG97zt1qRI47ULDnO2p4cPQn23rBzDwnNr4Lg1C42eo4bXQFMAuDrnlBN0TdVPl85RgCEhwmZi7dt/s2592/PXL_20230127_061013633.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2592" data-original-width="1944" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKPTceAXJ_wANsHeoorpfZEotkmBNoLjOeVezB-ZQsFJxQwJ8F8vkg352XHi2Sm9bJF4giKHcybBfpm2SGjoGzIGtkmRB2OJBV7lRQFPowBXTmG97zt1qRI47ULDnO2p4cPQn23rBzDwnNr4Lg1C42eo4bXQFMAuDrnlBN0TdVPl85RgCEhwmZi7dt/w150-h200/PXL_20230127_061013633.jpg" width="150" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQYoiVhbplicQ6Ihng1EkZRCozcTjT4bt8a1khnTYHfZL7Ye3x1Cmy3RiF8wGl799b1zLtbU34bdWvLYE15hyPxXpo17UJRJi6pRF9LXXsRNtSdzbRrNX4szK6xRt3TzOtgpVdPNfL7W-lJBJYexTltl0YLKnxoSrMsvXB_4GiZvZib4kxmyuMMBUK/s2592/PXL_20230131_215808283.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2592" data-original-width="1944" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQYoiVhbplicQ6Ihng1EkZRCozcTjT4bt8a1khnTYHfZL7Ye3x1Cmy3RiF8wGl799b1zLtbU34bdWvLYE15hyPxXpo17UJRJi6pRF9LXXsRNtSdzbRrNX4szK6xRt3TzOtgpVdPNfL7W-lJBJYexTltl0YLKnxoSrMsvXB_4GiZvZib4kxmyuMMBUK/w150-h200/PXL_20230131_215808283.jpg" width="150" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Next, break up some cork into interesting rock formations and arrange them in the wet glue. I was going for a bit of contrast, but not so much that it distracts from the mini that will be on top. It's a little tough to see here, but the base on the right has a copper bit under the end of the split log. I also take a minute here to pick out a few places to increase contrast where I want certain details more noticeable. This is done with a more delicate pass of Ushabti Bone dry brushing.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQpKtnZt1p9re_8tv8zRMgk54I3PiUDyRoSDRJelDf0lx5h5SRzdxeBwREMctfWM_nj2mAN-t967kE65dIliiTipXc2gcIJJBYKiLBaBCcGLVNS9L3QyGxcm6K2WcfnAYaeP50g3H1ipNT8r3Y3LWWeo0MR9QGV0ZZjLKCSOxmPlHO2_3H-k6cr_Tf/s2592/PXL_20230201_213833183.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1944" data-original-width="2592" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQpKtnZt1p9re_8tv8zRMgk54I3PiUDyRoSDRJelDf0lx5h5SRzdxeBwREMctfWM_nj2mAN-t967kE65dIliiTipXc2gcIJJBYKiLBaBCcGLVNS9L3QyGxcm6K2WcfnAYaeP50g3H1ipNT8r3Y3LWWeo0MR9QGV0ZZjLKCSOxmPlHO2_3H-k6cr_Tf/s320/PXL_20230201_213833183.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>Now's a good time to throw the minis on top and make sure you're liking the composition. There will be a few steps later where we can fix things we're not happy with, so we're just looking for big issues. Here I noticed that the middle guy had nothing under the front half of his foot. I then promptly forgot about it and didn't fix it until I was almost done, but this is where I should've done it to minimize re-work. Then a nice mix of tuft grass. I'm using mostly Army Painter stuff, but the tall spiky ones you'll see below are hand-made from this Woodland Scenics Field Grass. You just pinch a clump together, glob some super glue on the end and hit it with kicker to set it. Then you can trim it to whatever shape you need.</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGvqyrFXo_zZjKzpxJbgirBV9NCrTPGV0lmr3iM_mBtd1zSIwOjLBfRuwohbmd8ck0md0-90J2XENaqGbDXjtxvFIRL_ToFxFSnZGex9DVQK8h1yg5wQlzchof9FAeo7X--ls_4gFqFfBy3JgAT36-0Z9q0bW_yV5G9puVTWi_LeL-STDrZ5yiNF3U/s2472/PXL_20230201_215719547.PORTRAIT.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1649" data-original-width="2472" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGvqyrFXo_zZjKzpxJbgirBV9NCrTPGV0lmr3iM_mBtd1zSIwOjLBfRuwohbmd8ck0md0-90J2XENaqGbDXjtxvFIRL_ToFxFSnZGex9DVQK8h1yg5wQlzchof9FAeo7X--ls_4gFqFfBy3JgAT36-0Z9q0bW_yV5G9puVTWi_LeL-STDrZ5yiNF3U/s320/PXL_20230201_215719547.PORTRAIT.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUdTU_wSXz-gZO5MYXqybmPJqNwzh6t25iQq2asa19IdEs1SNTAqj3eal1vg9NbrK6D_TzlVbt5LmTQ74LHB8A2MpWEgY89tiEwretlv-T4J3dp-4KWzqycjIpG9NRfDM1pQE3tS09HEvLL0HL_1Dk075Z5ckouc1KjN15uKa1Id-VuRXWGl15peEC/s2588/PXL_20230202_062855500.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1359" data-original-width="2588" height="168" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUdTU_wSXz-gZO5MYXqybmPJqNwzh6t25iQq2asa19IdEs1SNTAqj3eal1vg9NbrK6D_TzlVbt5LmTQ74LHB8A2MpWEgY89tiEwretlv-T4J3dp-4KWzqycjIpG9NRfDM1pQE3tS09HEvLL0HL_1Dk075Z5ckouc1KjN15uKa1Id-VuRXWGl15peEC/s320/PXL_20230202_062855500.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I think it's important to mix plants. An environment never has just one plant type. Unfortunately with tufts they're all kind of the same shape, so I end up giving some a haircut to make them each have a bit of a standard elevation per color. The grey Deadland color above looks totally out of place in this environment but when it becomes a burnt plant later it works fantastic.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>Now we really start having some fun. Pigments. If you haven't used them, get some. They're super fun, and pretty tough to screw up. At least on bases. To get everything nice and dusty, I threw a good amount of Secret Weapon Burning Sands dust everywhere with an old paintbrush. It's important to get a little in the base of the plants too, otherwise they look too clean and out of place. I find with this dust you've also got to make sure it's not left in too big a clump or it stops looking dusty and starts looking bizarre. Blow gently on it over a trashcan while you break up the clumps with your brush. Then hit it all with some pigment fixer (or matte medium...I've even heard just plain rubbing alcohol will do the trick).<br /><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMOftJqAfeHg4KrrwEWAZDWbVIAi6_dpkopd8UQfBDY7bSb6y2SCjVzjNUJ6SAKV84tyv_mpv0aFONIlXzKwJnOyFX2yClXG-SGIdA6aJ9-o4aNAnTg7dYdgLrsw4l6JpYpxGz_0mY_ZPHKI4k0fixR8FxAWLFZV3usxSaZ5DYpxsVJg7M2_HS0WPN/s2288/PXL_20230201_222532883.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1526" data-original-width="2288" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMOftJqAfeHg4KrrwEWAZDWbVIAi6_dpkopd8UQfBDY7bSb6y2SCjVzjNUJ6SAKV84tyv_mpv0aFONIlXzKwJnOyFX2yClXG-SGIdA6aJ9-o4aNAnTg7dYdgLrsw4l6JpYpxGz_0mY_ZPHKI4k0fixR8FxAWLFZV3usxSaZ5DYpxsVJg7M2_HS0WPN/s320/PXL_20230201_222532883.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Now burn it all down. Years ago I saw some article on getting your own basing materials for cheap and they talked about hacking open a water filter and then using the filter medium as sand. I mean, sand isn't that hard to find but I did it anyway. The stuff inside is pretty jagged which makes a pretty good gravel if you paint over it. I realized that the slightly glossy sheen to it actually worked great for charcoal. Probably because it's charcoal. I never noticed the other green stuff until I put it under the bright hobby light, but you don't see it at all under normal circumstances. I applied a bit of this to the ends of the sticks on one end so it looked like they had been reduced to charcoal. Use PVA here. It takes longer to dry but Super Glue gave me issues- went a bit cloudy. That can give a bit of an ashy effect but it's tough to control. Finally, I went over the bases with a black pigment (Vallejo Carbon Black) to make flame damage.</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBYaSw8AvimHH35MZFEah3If0dz53Y6QDIZl3fSiHtDn_OG2oyFY_aCNJv0GluAcamLroo64mRLC_Jf5bblUr7UzBBWAwsGADn_zGIJPjcbKw1dJPVQI793nD-dXbiPZA8GF2jmqCv-8vla1puSBl8Plw8jYkQaARrX47Ldu7W9d54uimq9k0nXLrf/s1844/PXL_20230202_054729457.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1500" data-original-width="1844" height="163" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBYaSw8AvimHH35MZFEah3If0dz53Y6QDIZl3fSiHtDn_OG2oyFY_aCNJv0GluAcamLroo64mRLC_Jf5bblUr7UzBBWAwsGADn_zGIJPjcbKw1dJPVQI793nD-dXbiPZA8GF2jmqCv-8vla1puSBl8Plw8jYkQaARrX47Ldu7W9d54uimq9k0nXLrf/w200-h163/PXL_20230202_054729457.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And the results...well I'm pretty damn happy with them. This squad, along with an in-progress Ancient and Apothecary, were really about testing out paint schemes. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQmso3BD93qvAj7YKdje0Gq6ZwvbiLS1anSWwoYk8XuyMH6R91oV8Dv1n0lMCWDCfPgaTM-SshqelUVm-1CU_bunrJwcFcFKPlu2r-Di3xeosnOYD8g5wPDu-EnCC_uTBv6EA6zCfh1JhlL2XrAg3hLxTMgAem1lr-4TQmJx4LeaEWfYW9jbGRsZJ9/s2284/PXL_20230115_081425244.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="991" data-original-width="2284" height="139" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQmso3BD93qvAj7YKdje0Gq6ZwvbiLS1anSWwoYk8XuyMH6R91oV8Dv1n0lMCWDCfPgaTM-SshqelUVm-1CU_bunrJwcFcFKPlu2r-Di3xeosnOYD8g5wPDu-EnCC_uTBv6EA6zCfh1JhlL2XrAg3hLxTMgAem1lr-4TQmJx4LeaEWfYW9jbGRsZJ9/s320/PXL_20230115_081425244.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>I've figured out what I don't like (contrast paints for anything without heavy texture). I've figured out some things I do like (actually decided I'm good with the suggested GW scheme and totally think hand-painted flames are worth it on occasional models). I forgot how much I hate putting decals on shoulder pads- and the salamander logo is especially unforgiving- just a big rectangle with no places to put slices in it to help it wrap. I love the look of my Melta guy but he's definitely the one I spent the most time on with careful edge highlighting, etc. I'm certainly not going to put that much effort into every single model. I'll be doing more drybrushing on the next squad, but I was definitely rusty with that technique on these guys. Those models aren't getting closeups.<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4K4ojP0Rdpecv5NI6g-Jf4GJ-9yjOzF6jvm_-0HFlwj6twc1IV7jawIcE64xGi_NngoT8lJt-Z0iLpg8aXd61fY2YdWBLAuweIm1S35C0sQ8dx7RcylxInpzRUxztcnrz_1ws8zL9SQ3wwe6I7XFcfPzcGg9mkEq1xop59syRJxeKrxLbEgpeijba/s1568/PXL_20230120_032349329.PORTRAIT.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1567" data-original-width="1568" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4K4ojP0Rdpecv5NI6g-Jf4GJ-9yjOzF6jvm_-0HFlwj6twc1IV7jawIcE64xGi_NngoT8lJt-Z0iLpg8aXd61fY2YdWBLAuweIm1S35C0sQ8dx7RcylxInpzRUxztcnrz_1ws8zL9SQ3wwe6I7XFcfPzcGg9mkEq1xop59syRJxeKrxLbEgpeijba/s320/PXL_20230120_032349329.PORTRAIT.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p>So there's more experimenting to do. Aggressors are up next and I'm debating doing a bit of a zenithal highlight with that moot green, or a mixed down version. Kind of wishing I'd done a Waagah Flesh base to get a bit more depth too, but with my next 10 models already based in this green I won't get to try that for a while. Maybe just for consistency's sake I'll stick to the GW recipe.</p><p>Now to figure out bases. I want something that feels Salamander-appropriate, but I'm not really feeling the lava thing. It's more effort than it's worth to me to get them looking really good. I bought some of the technical paints and I might try kind of a burnt out desert wasteland vibe, like the Salamanders have come through and burnt everything to a crisp. I'll probably do a couple of test bases and see what I like. I love doing bases for some reason. </p><p>Also bought the new White Scars boxed set- not because I'm starting <i>another</i> new army (yet), but because I wanted some ATVs and a Chaplain and I can get them for cheap by selling off all the bikes and the HQ. So one month in and I'm already buying up way too many models before I've even finished anything. Damn you GW. <br /><br />See you next time with some hopefully totally completed models. <br /><br />~Deet</p><br />Deethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13626915676174061257noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6241207031380192212.post-89307760726499895162023-01-17T00:21:00.009-08:002023-01-17T00:21:57.322-08:00Video: Designing and printing custom paint racks<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/EyGnIWPI0GY" width="320" youtube-src-id="EyGnIWPI0GY"></iframe></div><br /><p>I'm ashamed it's taken me this long to organize my paints.</p><p><span></span></p><a name='more'></a><p></p><p>I've been keeping my paints in a huge bin for over a decade; I finally decided to do something about it!</p><p>Hope you enjoy the video.
