Or, you know, at least don't leave them in a display cabinet.
Showing off completed models is a point of pride for hobbyists. It's only natural to want to display something that you put countless hours of effort into. But if you truly value your models, and want to maintain them as well as possible, a proper storage solution is a must.
A few years ago, I purchased the feldherr infantry case to store my growing collection. It's affordable, and holds dozens of models neatly. The outer case is simply chip board with a plastic handle, but honestly, that's all you need. The extremely bulky GW cases are a bit much (both in protection overkill, and price). And unless you're throwing these things down the stairs, you DON'T need a hard shell, blow-molded case. It's nonsense.
Regular readers know that my man-cave is becoming a bedroom for my sons (RIP, pour some out, etc. etc.) and that meant that all my monstrous creatures and vehicles needed storage too. Two IKEA detolf cases had to be packed away to make room - so I headed to Feldherr.com to see what solutions they offered.
Unsurprisingly, they had a comprehensive and highly customizable selection of boxes and trays. After an evening of measuring base sizes and model heights, I had a rough idea of how much storage I would need, and crafted a custom order.
I purchased two 310mm boxes and six 90mm customizable pick-and-pluck foam trays. (and the spacing layers that go in between) This allowed for three trays in each box.
I laid each model on the surface and traced the outline using white chalk. This created a clear map for a custom shape for each model. I then plucked the foam to create a bespoke space for each model.
Some, like the Valkyrie, took an entire tray and were simple to figure. Others, like the tyranid monstrous creatures took some model "tetris" to best maximize the space and protection.
When completed, I stored:
- a valkyrie and flying stand
- a tau skyray
- a tau hammerhead and weapon options
- 2 piranha
- a riptide battle suit and all weapons options
- a chimera
- 2 leman russ tanks and all weapons options
- a winged hive tyrant
- the sawrmlord
- a haruspex and the exocrine bits
- 2 carnifexes
- a tervigon and the tyrannofex bits
- a mawlock and the trygon bits
- 2 broadside battle suits
- 2 venomthropes
- 3 biovores
- 2 tyrant guard
Though there was a considerable amount of effort in estimating what I needed, then customizing the foam (several nights of work) I'm highly satisfied with the result. I know the models will be protected and easily transported.
